How fees work

Plain answers before you book, in the order people ask them.

  • Insurance we work with

We work with VA Community Care when the VA authorizes your visits, and with the military health plan and other plan types that include an acupuncture benefit. Plans differ and change each year, so we check yours before you come in.

    • VA Community Care, with the VA's authorization

    • The military health plan, where the plan covers acupuncture

    • Many PPO plans with an acupuncture benefit

  • If you pay yourself

If you are not using a plan, you pay at the visit by card. Many health savings and flexible spending cards work for acupuncture, so ask your plan administrator before you book. Tell us if cost is a worry, and we will talk through your options.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

If a plan reimburses you, we give you an itemized receipt, called a superbill, after each visit so you can send it in. Whether the plan pays is its decision.

    • Is there an acupuncture benefit?

    • How many visits does it cover?

    • Is there a copay or a deductible?

    • Do I need a referral?

  • An estimate in advance

We give a written good faith estimate in advance to anyone paying without insurance. Ask for it when you book, and we send it before your first visit. Under federal law, if a bill is $400 or more above your good faith estimate, you can dispute it.

  • Checking your benefits

Before your first visit, our front desk calls your plan, asks the four questions above and tells you what it said. For VA Community Care, we wait for the VA's authorization. If something changes, we call you.

  • What the first visit includes

About 60 minutes: a talk about your health and your medicines, a look at your tongue and pulse, a visit with needles and a plan for the next few visits. Your acupuncturist explains the risks and answers your questions before any needle goes in. What you owe for it is on your estimate or in your benefit check.
