Paying for a visit

Three routes to a first visit

The steps differ, and plans change. Ask your plan or your VA care team first, then call us. We check anything we can and tell you what we find.

  • 01

    VA Community Care

A community provider such as ours can see you if the VA authorizes it.

    • Ask your VA care team whether acupuncture fits your plan

    • Ask whether a community provider can see you

    • The VA sends the authorization to us before the first visit

    • We start once it is in place

  • 02

    The military health plan

Plan types differ in what they cover and in whether they ask for a referral.

    • Bring your plan card

    • We call your plan and ask what it covers

    • We tell you about any copay or deductible

    • If it is not covered, you can pay yourself

  • 03

    Paying yourself

No referral and no authorization. You pay at the visit.

    • We send a written estimate before you come

    • You get an itemized receipt after each visit

    • HSA and FSA cards often work: ask your plan administrator

    • Tell us if cost is a worry, and we go over your options

Questions to ask before you call us

These work for any plan, and the answers go on the checklist we keep for your visit.

  • 01

    Is there an acupuncture benefit?

Your plan or your VA care team can say whether acupuncture is covered at all.

  • 02

    For how many visits?

Ask whether the benefit has a limit and how it is counted.

  • 03

Do I owe a copay or deductible?

Ask what you pay at the visit and what you pay later.

  • 04

Do I need a referral or an authorization?

Ask who sends it, and who it should be sent to.
