Ear seeds
Ear seeds are tiny seeds or beads on a small piece of tape, placed on points of the ear. You press them lightly between visits.
Who usually comes in
People who like a method they can use between visits, and people who would rather not have needles, ask for ear seeds. They can also follow an acupuncture visit.
A visit can include
- A few seeds taped to one ear or both
- A note on how and when to press them
- Left on for several days, then peeled off
- No needle needed
What a visit is like, in order
Afterward the ear may feel a little tender where you press. If the tape itches or the skin looks red, take the seeds off.

Step 1: We talk
Your acupuncturist asks about your week and where you would like a reminder to rest or loosen up.
- 02
Step 2: We place the seeds
A few seeds go on the ear, each with a small square of tape. It takes a few minutes.
- 03
Step 3: You press them
We show you how to press each seed lightly a few times a day. Stop if the ear becomes sore.
- 04
Step 4: You take them off
The seeds come off after several days. We tell you how, and you can remove them sooner whenever you like.
Tell us first
Say any of these when you book, and again at the visit.
Pregnancy
If you are or might be pregnant, some points are avoided, and your acupuncturist explains the risks.
Blood thinners or bleeding
If you take a blood thinner or bleed easily, bruising is more likely, and we plan around it.
Tape or seed allergy
If tape irritates your skin or you react to seeds, tell us. We pick another tape or skip the seeds.
Lymph nodes removed
If you have had lymph nodes removed, we avoid needles on that side.
Bleeding disorders
Tell us about any condition that affects clotting. We may skip some methods or choose fewer needles.
Worry about needles
Say so. We can start with other methods or go very slowly, and you can stop at any point.
How many visits, and what this does not do
Ear seeds are usually renewed at a visit, so how often you come depends on your plan. Your acupuncturist suggests it, and you can stop whenever you like.
What it does not do
Ear seeds do not replace your doctor's care, and they are not a substitute for any medicine you take. We do not promise a result.
When to see a doctor instead
See your doctor or an urgent care clinic first for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, a sudden severe headache, or a fever with a stiff neck. In an emergency, call 911.
